This allows you to receive full retail credit for the power your system generates.
How much you can potentially save on electricity depends upon many factors, including the size of the system you choose and your current retail electricity rate. We can help assess other ways to make your home more energy efficient, which is the best first step to take when switching to solar power.
We tell people they really need to look at their home energy use, The more energy efficient you make your home, the less equipment you need to put on your roof."
If you're purchasing your own solar panels, it’s best to hire a local solar contractor that specializes in solar power. The contractor will take into account many considerations, including how much energy your home uses and potential sites for the panels. The type of roof you have, which direction your home faces and even nearby trees and other shade-producing obstructions all need to be factored in as well when designing a system. It's not just something cookie-cutter, out of the box,
Also, be sure all components carry the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) mark for quality and safety, and inquire about a truss-mounted system for roof panels -- especially if you live in an area prone to severe weather.
Still in need of more information- the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory. So put your plan together, go solar, and expect many sunny days in your future.

Household electricity bills skyrocket

Electric bills have skyrocketed in the last five years, a sharp reversal from a quarter-century when Americans enjoyed stable power bills even as they used more electricity.

More electricity use at homes and higher prices are driving up power bills.

Households paid a record $1,619 on average for electricity in 2010, the fifth consecutive yearly increase above the inflation rate. The jump has added about $400 a year to what households pay for electricity. That’s the largest sustained increase since a run-up in electricity prices during the 1970s. Electricity is consuming a greater share of Americans’ after-tax income than at any time since 1996 — about $2.50 of every $100 in income at a time when income growth has stagnated. Greater electricity use at home and higher prices per kilowatt hour are both driving the higher costs, in roughly equal measure:

•Residential demand strongly increased last year to a record high. Air-conditioners and household appliances use less power than ever. A new refrigerator consumes half the electricity as a similar one bought in 1990. But consumers have bigger houses, more air-conditioning and more electronics than before, outpacing gains in efficiency and conservation.

Prices are climbing, too, hitting a record 12.8 cents per residential kilowatt hour so far this year. The increase reflects higher fuel prices and the expense of replacing old power plants, including heavily polluting — but cheap to operate — coal plants that don’t meet federal clean air requirements.

Higher bills are a huge problem for low income families, which opposes a proposed rate hike. Utilities are what people’s budgets start with. The rate increase is needed to pay for replacing old power plants and making the transmission system more reliable. They reached a tentative agreement to raise rates 7.2% in February, lower than its original 17% request.

The industry as a whole is facing higher costs because we’re retiring our aging fleet of power plants.

The future of energy prices and the upcoming closure of more polluting coal plants make the long-term outlook cloudy for consumers. There are plans to ask for another rate hike next year to cover the costs of new natural gas-fired plants.

      Green Monster Energy Savings Guide

                 Exclusive to Homeowners in MD-DC-VA

Right in your own home, you have the power to reduce energy demand, and when you reduce demand, you cut the amount of resources, like coal and gas, needed to make energy—that means you create less greenhouse gas emissions, which keeps air cleaner for all of us… and saves on your utility bills!

Did you know that the typical U.S. family spends about $2,490 a year on home utility bills? Unfortunately, a large portion of that energy is wasted. And each year, electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars. And as for the road, transportation accounts for 67% of all U.S. oil consumption. The good news is that there is a lot you can do to save energy and money at home. Start making small changes today. To cut your energy use up to 35-40%.

Energy-efficient improvements not only make your home more comfortable, they can yield long-term financial rewards. Reduce utility bills more, than make up for the higher price of energy-efficient appliances and improvements over their lifetimes. In addition your home could bring in a higher price when you sell.

Solar Heating and Cooling

Using passive solar design techniques to heat and cool your home can be both environmentally friendly and cost effective. Passive solar heating techniques include placing larger, insulated windows on south-facing walls and locating thermal mass, such as a concrete slab floor or a heat-absorbing wall, close to the windows. In many cases, your heating costs could be more than 50% lower than the cost of heating the same house that does not include passive solar design.

Passive solar design can also help reduce your cooling costs. Passive solar cooling techniques include carefully designed overhangs, windows with reflective coatings, and reflective coatings on exterior walls and the roof.

A passive solar house requires careful design and site orientation, which depend on the local climate. So, if you are considering passive solar design for new construction or a major remodeling, you should consult an architect familiar with passive solar techniques.

Solar Water Heaters

If you heat water with electricity, have high electric rates, and have an unshaded, south-facing location (such as a roof) on your property, consider installing a GMW solar water heater. The solar units are environmentally friendly and can now be installed on your roof to blend with the architecture of your house.

More than 1.5 million homes and businesses in the United States have invested in solar water heating systems, and surveys indicate that more than 94% of these customers consider the systems a good investment. Solar water heating systems are also good for the environment. Solar water heaters avoid the greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity production. During a 20-year period, one solar water heater can avoid more than 50 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. GMW’s – ENERGY STAR label and certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation.

Windows can be one of your home’s most attractive features. Windows provide views, daylighting, ventilation, and solar heating in the winter. Unfortunately, they can also account for 16% to 34% of your heating bill. During the summer, your air conditioner must work harder to cool hot air from sunny windows. Install windows and use curtains and shade to give your air conditioner and energy bill a break. If your home has single-pane windows, as many U.S. homes do, consider replacing them with new double-pane windows with high-performance glass (e.g., low-e or spectrally selective). In MD-DC-VA colder climates, select windows that are gas filled with low emissivity (low-e) coatings on the glass to reduce heat loss. In warmer climates, select windows with spectrally selective coatings to reduce heat gain. If you are building a new home, you can offset some of the cost of installing more efficient windows because they allow you to buy smaller, less expensive heating and cooling equipment.

$ Long-Term Savings Tip

Installing, high-performance windows will improve your home’s energy performance. While it may take several years for new windows to pay off in energy savings, the benefits of added comfort and improved aesthetics and functionality may make the investment worth it to you. Many window technologies are available that are worth considering.

Efficient windows may have two or more panes of glass, warm-edge spacers between the window panes, improved framing materials, and low-e coating(s), which are microscopically thin coatings that help keep heat inside during the winter and outside during the summer.

Shopping Tips for Windows

Look for the label.

Check with local utilities to see what rebates or other financial incentives are available for window replacement.

High-performance windows have at least two panes of glass and a low-e (low emissivity) coating.

Remember, the lower the U-factor, the better the insulation. In colder climates, focus on finding a low U-factor.

Low solar heat gain coefficients (SHGCs) reduce heat gain. In warm climates, look for a low SHGC.

In temperate climates with both heating and cooling seasons, select windows with both low U-factors and low SHGCs to maximize energy savings.

Look for whole-unit U-factors and SHGCs, rather than center-of-glass, or COG, U-factors and SHGCs. Whole-unit numbers more accurately reflect the energy performance of the entire product.

Have your windows installed by trained professionals. Be sure they’re installed according to manufacturer’s instructions; otherwise, your warranty may be void.

There is a potentially record breaking U.S.winter for 2011-2012, with extremely cold temperatures and exceptional levels of snow. Requests for residential solar installations are up That will not only help keep a lid on heating bills, but it will help preserve homeowners’ investments for a longer service life. While winter is still preparing for its annual trip back across the Equator. Homeowners should check weatherstripping, hardware and caulking. Broken, cracked, brittle or discolored caulking or weatherstripping should be replaced. Locking hardware should seal the sash tightly against the weatherstripping. Controlling water penetration is another important consideration. Water drainage pathways–weep holes and sill dams–must be kept clear of dirt, sand, stucco, paint, sealants, roofing cement or any other debris.

Water leakage can occur at the main frame corners if not properly maintained; and if a crack appears, it should be sealed . Homeowners should be advised never to use a razor blade, putty knife, steel wool, abrasive pad or anything that may scratch the glass surface or mark the framing. Also, a pressure washer or high-pressure sprayer should never be used to wash or rinse windows , doors or skylights, as this can dislodge seals and gaskets and damage frame components. If glass is cracked or broken, or if there is fogging between insulating glass panes, Cap City should be contacted for replacement. Battening the hatches by replacing windows, doors and skylights can in some measure help smooth a wild winter ride–

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Homeowner service requests for energy-efficient projects increased substantially year-over-year and during the first half of 2011 actually 52%, -mainly for eShield attic insulation and Solar PV and Solar Hot Water.

The motivating factors among those surveyed are saving on energy bills (35%), protecting the environment (25%) and improving the comfort
(23%). Energy efficiency is the top of mind as energy costs rise and new financing and incentive programs grow.

Kicking Off National Energy

Awareness Month

As you may know, the beginning of October marks the beginning National Energy
Awareness Month, a national effort to underscore how central energy is to our
national prosperity, security, and environmental well-being. In commemoration
of National Energy Awareness Month, the Obama Administration is kicking off a
month of clean energy events and activities. Senior administration officials
from across the federal government will be highlighting the work they are doing
to position our country for a sustainable future, create new clean energy jobs
and lay the foundation for our long-term economic security. Check out the
current calendar
of events, and be sure to check back often as more events are added.

Since taking office, President Obama and his Administration have taken
unprecedented steps to build a clean energy economy in this country. We’ve
invested over $90 billion in clean energy technology through the Recovery
Act. We worked with the automotive industry and the environmental community
to set new tough new fuel-economy
standards and the first-ever greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars and
light trucks. And the federal government itself — one of the largest consumers
of energy in the country, is leading
by example by cutting its carbon footprint and finding creative ways to go
green.

While we have made important progress in building a clean energy economy in
this country, there is still much more work to be done. We must continue to
invest in the wind, solar, biofuels, clean coal and other clean energy
technologies as well as energy efficiency to create jobs of the future and
compete in the global marketplace. And we must redouble our efforts to pass
comprehensive energy legislation that reduces our dependence on foreign oil,
creates a new generation of homegrown clean energy jobs, and cuts pollution to
reduce the risks posed by climate change.

Learn
more about President Obama‘s commitment to making our nation the leader in
the clean energy economy and take a look at some of the National Energy
Awareness Month events coming up in the next week. To learn more about these
events, check out the calendar.

A Message from Mitchell LaBorwit, CEO of Cap City Home Remodeling

As the founder of Cap City, I often revisit our company’s foundation and the reason for existence. With countless places to buy windows and siding in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC, why choose our company?

In essence, what sets us apart from other companies offering similar window and siding products and services?

To answer these questions, one must have an understanding of the landscape of window and siding suppliers in the Baltimore and Washington area. Homeowners have countless options when it comes to purchasing windows and siding – a fact that becomes painfully obvious as we listen to all types of radio, print, television and online advertisements. However, customers – the actual homeowners – do not have access to as much information or details as is necessary to make a well-informed purchasing decision. Window and Siding industry statistics traditionally yield a high percentage of buyer’s remorse. For example, more than 40% of new homeowners are unhappy with their windows! In my opinion, this undoubtedly equates to a genuine need for a window and siding company whose top focus involves educating the customer and providing a solid, comprehensive post-sales support system.

The Making of a Customer-Focuses Window and Siding Company

With twenty five years of window and siding experience, our company not only has the information necessary , but we pride ourselves on providing and sharing that important information with the consumer. When I started Cap City, educating consumers was my top priority. Today, it continues to be one of the components that set Cap City apart from the competition. We provide more than basic information on window and siding products for consumers by offering an in-depth educational experience. Personally, I truly believe that focusing on the customer experience results in a much higher level of satisfaction.

Cap City offers products and services to a variety of homeowners. Each project is unique, and we believe there should not be a cookie cutter approach to the buying experience.

Considerations When Purchasing Windows and Siding

Price and availability for windows and siding are often of secondary importance to various benefits, features, and options. The general public knows little about the explosion of options made available over the past ten years for windows and siding. Cap City includes accompanying spec-sheets so customers are fully aware of all product options available when they place an order. Knowing what window and siding options are available ensures our customers make a well-informed decision. You will never hear one of our customers say “I didn’t know that option was available…”

After making their purchase, customers often wonder who they should contact with regard to questions about their window and siding installation, or for warranty claims, or even how to properly operate the locking system of their new door, windows or siding. At many window and siding companies, there is simply no contact or follow up to help assist customers with these important items. It’s why people get buyer’s remorse! This is where the Cap City experience really stands out. With dedicated in-house window and siding field technicians and a dedicated service manager to oversee warranty and service inquiries, our customers can rest assured that they have chosen to work with a company that goes above and beyond. The best window in the world isn’t worth a dime if a customer cannot have it serviced when is broken or in need of repair.

The internet is full of negative reviews on websites regarding poor window service and dissatisfaction with window and siding products. This is largely due to lack of response to customers in need of service and support. The distribution network for most window and siding brands does not include convenient, reliable support systems for warranties and servicing. At Cap City, we go the extra mile to ensure our customers receive the best in customer support from start to finish.

I guarantee it.

NO MORE NAKED ROOFS -BE PART OF THE SOLUTION TODAY AND SAVE!

Our sun, is without a doubt, one of the most awesome sources in our known universe. How we can harness the sun’s immense power to help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels that are harming our environment.

Thanks to leading scientists, we now have the technology and knowledge to harness the sun’s awesome power. So how can we use the sun’s energy to power our homes or, better yet, even the smaller items like our water heaters? Well here at greenmonster, we’ve taken a deep look into the available options for households and determined which technologies work best for homes across the nation. Let’s discuss some options :

PHOTOVOLTAIC :

Photo-vol-taic is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors that exhibit the photovoltaic effect. In fact, as of 2011, photovoltaic generates electricity in more than 100 countries worldwide and is the fastest growing power-generation technology in the world.

SOLAR THERMAL :

Solar thermal energy, or STE, is a technology for harnessing solar energy for thermal energy (heat). Solar thermal collectors are classified by the U.S. Energy Information Administration as low, medium, or high temperature collectors. In the United States alone, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems account for over 25 percent of the energy used in commercial buildings and nearly half of the energy used in residential buildings. Solar heating, cooling, and ventilation technologies can be used to offset a portion of this energy. This is why we recommend using this technology for residential – it allows for collecting thermal energy and using it to heat your water for showers, cooking, washing, etc. Rather than using conventional fossil fuels to heat your water, which ends up costing you, the homeowner, a monthly fee (check your utility bill), you can install a solar water heater that uses the sun to heat the water.

“Don’t want big goofy looking panels on your roof.” I don’t blame you! Times have changed and so have the panel options. Go w ith very low-profile 3ft. by 7ft. solar panel units that are positioned to gather the optimal amount of solar energy. This way you can still have a great looking house that is eco-friendly and still keep the outside look you desire.

If you have any questions or are seeking more information please contact GreenMonster. We have Energy Consultants ready to assist you with all your energy consulting needs.
